Queensland’s State Development Minister Jeff Seeney says growing numbers of public sector employees want to work on a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) basis.
Mr Seeney says the State Government is not against FIFO employment to service some of Queensland’s more remote regions.
However, he says it is important workers have the option of living locally if they choose.
“With doctors and dentists and nurses and police, those people are making those choices based on their personal desires and they have every right to do that,” he said.
“What we have to do is make sure that they too have a reasonable choice – that the State Government housing that’s provided to State Government employees provides them with a reasonable choice.”
He says it is becoming more and more expensive to find housing for public sector workers.
“It’s becoming increasingly expensive because State Government employees – teachers, police people, nurses – have to compete in a market that is distorted,” he said.
“It’s distorted because the Government haven’t planned properly – they haven’t ensured that the social infrastructure like housing has been developed before the crisis point and as an integral part of the project management.”
Meanwhile, the Defence Reserves Support Council (DRSC) says mining companies should consider hiring more defence reservists on mine sites.
DRSC Queensland chairwoman Margaret Goody was in Mount Isa last week to talk to prospective employers.
She says military training imparts many of the skills mine operators are looking for.
“There’s certainly a very strong focus on workplace health and safety and obviously mining is extraordinarily focused on that area, and quite rightly so,” she said.
“I guess some of the other areas is around integrity, about being able to lead, about being able to think and contingency planning.”
